“Illustrated Alphabet” - The 3/4 students were challenged in the third quarter to practice a variety of pen and ink techniques to draw and shade animals and objects. After learning about hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling, students examined medieval illustrated manuscripts as examples of ink-drawn images. They were excited by the large and highly decorated letters that appeared in these manuscripts and set out to create their own alphabet. They studied different fonts and then choose a font for their own individual letter. After drawing the letter, they illustrated the page with different objects and animals which begin with that particular character. Students drew borders and created a variety of lines using ink, pencil, and paint markers.
