Mrs. Seibert ~ Eighth Grade
This art piece created by Mrs. Seibert’s 8th grade class is based on the story of Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who was a victim of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima at 2 and diagnosed with leukemia (referred to as "atomic bomb disease") at 9. When she was hospitalized, paper cranes were brought to her room from a local high school club. Sadako's Father told her the ancient Japanese legend which promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by the gods. Sadako set a goal for herself to fold one thousand cranes. Sadako died in 1955 at the age of 12. A popular version of the story is that Sadako fell short of her goal of folding 1,000 cranes, having folded only 644 before her death and that her friends completed the 1,000 and buried them all with her. In 1958, a statue of Sadako holding a golden crane was unveiled in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. At the foot of the statue is a plaque that reads: "This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world." In honor of Sadako’s story and world peace each student folded forty paper cranes for a total of 1,000 paper cranes to create this peace sign.
